Within Bell Labs, the "Optical Systems & Devices Research" lab investigates forward-looking research activities for the preparation of the future optical transport networks that will interconnect data centers, cities and continents. Until recently, such networks were expected to provide ever increasing capacity, flexibility and agility at reduced costs and energy footprint. Lately, a new dimension, security, emerges as a separate, high-priority need.

The future optical fabric offers digital services down to the physical network layer by introducing platforms to collect, visualize, analyze, and learn from the collected data. In this direction, recent works propose novel telemetry architecture thanks to generative AI feeding digital twin for optical networks.

We're seeking brilliant master's students to dive into the exciting topic!

Responsibilities

As an intern, you will work with data automatically collected from a small optical mesh network. You will gain hands-on experience with Nokia products, giving you insights into real-life optical systems. You will work towards a digital twin of the optical network. Your mission? Investigate of generative AI and LLM transform optical network data collection.

You will then propose a telemetry architecture using LLM to retrieve the collected data and feed the digital twin. If time permits, generative AI could be added further to propose optimization tasks or predictive maintenance operations.

You will be part of a dynamic team contributing to groundbreaking research to shape the future of the industry!

  • Participating with other team members in lab experiments
  • Investigate the impact of generative AI to simplify data collection and utilization
  • Propose novel telemetry architecture
  • Design a digital twin leveraging genAI and the proposed telemetry

Qualifications

  • Background in optical communications and computer science
  • Eager to develop skills in a lab environment
  • Publish scientific results in international conferences
  • Strong spoken and written technical English.
