The team you'll be part of
Bell Labs Core Research, Early Stage Researcher (ESR) - Network Architecture Research
The Network Architecture Research team is taking an end-to-end view of communication networks, from mobile and fixed access to IP & Optical transport and cloud. We are looking for problem solvers with excellent analytical and programming skills who are excited to explore problems in cross-domain networking.

Currently having a degree (a Master of Science degree or equivalent) in Computer Science, Communications Engineering, Electrical Engineering or similar from an accredited University / National College of Engineering (École Nationale Supérieure d'Ingénieurs) in France or equivalent in Europe.

Qualifications
Work with the members of Network Architecture Research (NAR) Lab team to define and implement software for advanced joint cloud and networking functions to improve efficiency and performance of their operations.
Implement proof of concepts for demonstrations and presentations.
Leverage open-source and standard software for your solutions to be designed.
IP & optical networking technologies and AI research approaches may move to Generative AI-native management of network services.
While Gen-AI for Transport networks can be envisioned to become integral parts of fully autonomous network operations, it is needed to define the criteria to evaluate quantitatively what can transport network element operations and network service management architectures integrate and how they can improve and evolve from the current state-of-the-art with respect to the coming requirements of telecom service providers notably security and sustainability.
The thesis will have to face many challenging directions stemming from the inherent complexities of managing jointly IP and Optical network services, the problems of integrating AI, Generative-AI and Self-Evolving technologies, and the envisioned constraints of deploying Generative-AI in comprehensive use-cases.
The combination of advanced IP & optical networking technologies and artificial intelligence research approaches may move forward to Generative AI-native management of future transport network services.

Qualifications
- Knowledge of communication networks and/or cloud computing, e.g., Open-Source Network control platform (Software Defined Networking like ODL, ONOS) and container management platform (Virtual Infrastructure Manager like Kubernetes).
- An interest in full autonomous networking with Generative-AI (LLM/LRM) or blockchain / distributed ledger technology concepts.
- Strong programming skills: e.g., Python, Java, C#, or similar
- Knowledge & interest of statistic & AI/ML, stochastic analysis, and DevOps, CI/CD software development methods.
- Knowledge of packet / optical communication networks and control theory.
- Curious on Web3 technologies and distributed ledger technologies.
- Some experiences using public cloud platforms, e.g., AWS, Google Cloud, others.
