A propos du centre ou de la direction fonctionnelle

Inria is the French National Institute for Research in Digital Science, of which the Inria Côte d'Azur University Center is a part. With strong expertise in computer science and applied mathematics, the research projects of the Inria Côte d'Azur University Center cover all aspects of digital science and technology and generate innovation. Based mainly in Sophia Antipolis, but also in Nice and Montpellier, it brings together 47 research teams and nine support services. It is active in the fields of artificial intelligence, data science, IT system security, robotics, network engineering, natural risk prevention, ecological transition, digital biology, computational neuroscience, health data, and more. The Inria Center at Université Côte d'Azur is a major player in terms of scientific excellence, thanks to the results it has achieved and its collaborations at both European and international level.

Contexte et atouts du poste

Ontology-Based Data Access (OBDA) is a paradigm that has shown strong potential for integrating heterogeneous data and enabling knowledge-driven querying of data. Nevertheless, to tackle real applications, current OBDA systems today need to be extended by supporting more expressive query languages and by developing explanation facilities for query answers.

Mission confiée

The recruited postdoctoral researcher will contribute to the study of foundational and algorithmic questions related to the extension of OBDA. In particular, such extensions will be motivated by a case study in digital agriculture.

The extension of OBDA towards more expressive queries will consider features among aggregation, navigation, and negation. In this context, a theoretical analysis of semantics, as well as decidability and complexity for query extensions, shall be studied.

The candidate will also contribute to the development of novel frameworks for qualitative and quantitative explanations of query results, with special attention to the interaction between expressivity and explanation, especially when dealing with large sets of explanations to enumerate.

Principales activités

Expected outcomes include publications of the results on the aforementioned topics in leading conferences of knowledge representation and reasoning and databases.

Compétences

The candidate should have strong skills in theoretical computer science, in particular in topics like decidability and complexity. Experience with the application of these techniques to issues related with knowledge represenation and reasoning and databases would be appreciated.
The candidate should dispose of a good level of english, good communicating skills, and be able to integrate and work effectively with different researchers from the team.
