Job Description

With 11,600 employees of 47 nationalities, 2.5 million tonnes of flat stainless and electrical steel capacity in Brazil and Europe, and an industrial network concentrated in six production facilities across Brazil, Belgium and France, Aperam is a truly global industry leader. According to our values of agility and ingenuity, we collaborate with customers to design tailor-made, innovative and long-lasting solutions to their most challenging needs.

To accelerate the digital transformation (TOBIAS program), we are looking for talented people who have both a technical engineering interest as well as extensive IT skills. As a Data Engineer, your primary responsibility is to co-create the digital factory (often referred to as Industry 4.0) together with business and local/corporate IT.

The TOBIAS program aims to provide a central cloud platform, i.e. a single source of truth to serve as a tool for all business users. It is therefore of utmost importance to make the TOBIAS platform cost-efficient, scalable and easy to maintain. This requires the Data Engineer to strongly focus on modular cloud efficient coding, harmonization of data, data-pipelines and data structures while installing best practices for role based access management, cluster management in the Azure cloud and software deployment.

Data Engineers design and build pipelines that transform, join and transport data into a standard format. These pipelines must take data from many disparate tables and collect them into a single data lake that represents the data uniformly as a single source of truth. It manages ETL processes, databases and data lakes/lakehouses, virtualization and API's. The Data Engineer is focused on maximum reuse of data, software, models and code to reduce time to deliver and ensure lean data management, architecture and minimum run-and-maintain costs/efforts.

Responsibilities

The Data Engineer connects the data suppliers (α-engineers) to the data users (β-engineers). The data suppliers (i.e. data owners and stewards in IT terminology) have the responsibility to provide clean data, meta- and masterdata to the data engineer, who is enabled to harmonize and connect the data and present it to the data users and facilitates them (e.g. CTO Energy, Quality, Supply Chain, Reliability, Process).

As a data engineer you are part of a dedicated Data Team and in close contact with the Data Governance Officer, the Cloud Expert, the IT Architect and the industrial IT teams. You will be physically located in a manufacturing plant, but working corporate, reporting to the global CDO to preserve standardization and governance.

As a Data Engineer, you
  • show interest in understanding the stainless, electrical steel production process;
  • understand and connect business data;
  • facilitate the business by setting up scalable and well governed structures;
  • assist the business with use-case development and implementation;
  • are responsible for designing, developing, deploying and maintaining efficient data orchestration pipelines;

  • support data standardization and governance;
  • collaborate with teams to enhance data reliability and consistency;
  • support data quality and integrity (including tool creation for SPC);
  • are responsible for technical specifications.

Qualifications

As a data engineer, you:
  • have a Bachelor or Master's Degree in Computer Science or IT or engineering with 5-10 years experience ideally in a manufacturing or industrial sector;
  • are a teamplayer;
  • posses good communication skills;
  • have strong analytical skills;
  • focus on robust and cost-effective code development;
  • have experience with cloud-based big data solutions (Databricks, Microsoft Data Fabric);
  • have knowledge of distributed cloud computing and storage and big data frameworks and challenges;
  • are familiar with infrastructure as code (Terraform) and version control systems (GIT);
  • are familiar with CI/CD for automated deployments;
  • are fluent in English (both speaking and writing).
    French, Portuguese or Dutch language skills are a plus
